Colt Creek State park

Colt Creek State Park is a natural treasure in the heart of Florida, located just north of Lakeland in Polk County. Covering more than 5,000 acres of pine flatwoods, cypress domes, wetlands, and open pastures, the park offers visitors a chance to experience Florida’s wilderness away from the noise of the cities and the usual tourist spots.

The park is also very accessible — it’s only about a one-hour drive from Orlando (around 50 miles / 80 km) and less than an hour from Tampa, making it a perfect day trip for those who want a break from theme parks and urban life.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are over 15 miles of multi-use trails that wind through diverse habitats. These trails can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback, and they showcase the park’s rich ecosystems. Colt Creek is also home to three scenic lakes where visitors can fish, kayak, or canoe. Anglers will find largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream among the common catches.

Wildlife is abundant in the park. Visitors may spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, river otters, alligators, and the rare gopher tortoise. Birdwatchers are in for a treat as well, with the chance to see bald eagles soaring overhead or listen to songbirds calling from the trees.

When it comes to facilities, Colt Creek State Park is well equipped to make your visit comfortable:

  • Campgrounds with water and electricity, plus more primitive sites for those who want a back-to-nature experience.

  • Cabins available for guests who prefer extra comfort.

  • Picnic areas and pavilions (available for group rentals and events).

  • Playground for children.

  • Boat ramps and fishing piers at the lakes.

  • Modern restrooms and showers at the camping areas.

  • A visitor center/park shop where you can get maps, information, and sometimes basic supplies.

Thanks to its rural location, the park is also an excellent place to enjoy a dark, star-filled night sky, far from the light pollution of the cities.

In summary, Colt Creek State Park is a place to experience the peaceful, unspoiled side of Florida. Whether you want to hike through forests, paddle across calm lakes, camp under the stars, or simply relax with a picnic, the park offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages — all within a short drive from both Orlando and Tampa.
