Apopka Wildlife Drive – Florida’s Hidden Nature Gem

If you’re looking for an exciting and scenic adventure in Florida, don’t miss Apopka Wildlife Drive. This 11-mile (18 km) one-way road winds through wetlands and canals just north of Lake Apopka, the state’s fourth-largest lake. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers, with more than 360 bird species recorded here. You may also spot alligators, bobcats, river otters, turtles, and other wildlife that call the lake and surrounding marshlands home.

Along the route, you can stream a free audio tour that shares the history of Lake Apopka, its restoration efforts, and details about the habitats and animals you see. Signs along the drive show you which track to play at different points.

Keep your camera ready – it’s not unusual to see large alligators basking in the sun, swimming, or even hissing if disturbed. Remember, these are wild animals: never approach or feed them (feeding alligators is illegal and dangerous).
