One of the newest and most talked-about additions to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is TRON Lightcycle / Run, a high-tech roller coaster that brings Disney’s TRON universe to life. The attraction opened in April 2023 and sits beneath a massive glowing canopy of sweeping steel curves and blue neon light. Both day and night, its futuristic design is breathtaking – a mix of architecture and art that has redefined the look of Tomorrowland.
The Ride & Story
Inspired by TRON: Legacy, guests are “digitized” into the Grid and climb aboard their own Lightcycle motorcycle. After straddling the bike and leaning forward into racing position, riders are launched from 0 to nearly 60 mph in seconds – one of the fastest launches in Disney history. The coaster races through glowing scenes of programs, enemies, and energy gates, making you feel like you’re inside the TRON world itself.
The Experience – Our Take
There’s no doubt that TRON Lightcycle / Run is an incredible visual and technical achievement. The canopy, the launch, and the ride’s atmosphere are unmatched. That said, we think the ride is too short – just as the thrill peaks, the experience is over. The low capacity also leads to very long lines, especially on busy days. It’s a must-do at least once, but probably not the ride you’ll line up for repeatedly.
Another important note: the Lightcycle ride vehicles are not very accommodating for larger body types. Because of the motorcycle-style seating and locking restraints that secure your legs and back, some guests may not be able to ride if the system cannot fasten properly. In those cases, Disney cannot allow the guest to board for safety reasons. To avoid disappointment, it’s a good idea to try the test vehicles placed outside the attraction entrance before getting in line. This way, you’ll know in advance whether the restraint will fit securely.
Smart Locker System
To keep the Lightcycles streamlined, TRON uses a smart locker system before boarding. Guests scan their MagicBand or park ticket to access free, double-sided lockers for bags and larger items. Lockers can be opened from both sides, making it quick and efficient to collect belongings after the ride.
A thoughtful detail: each Lightcycle has a small storage bin built into the ride vehicle, perfect for holding essentials like your phone, wallet, or glasses. That way, you don’t need to put everything in the locker – a small but smart touch that makes the process smoother and more guest-friendly.
Standby Queue & Lightning Lane
As of now, TRON Lightcycle / Run operates with a traditional standby line, where guests simply wait in person to ride.
You also have the option to skip the line using a Lightning Lane Single Pass (paid). This pass lets you enter a faster queue during a specified return window and is separate from the Multi-Pass.
Tips Before You Ride
Without a virtual queue, plan to get there early or monitor the My Disney Experience app for most efficient wait times.
If you don’t mind paying extra, a Lightning Lane Single Pass can guarantee you ride time with much shorter waits.
For families or groups, compare the value—standby waits can be long, but sometimes the extra cost of Lightning Lane may not be worth it.
